La Liga title and the amazing 51 goals seem not to be enough for a 31-year old Lionel Messi to secure his sixth Ballon d’Or. After Catalans were dramatically upset at Anfield during the Champions League semi-finals matchup, advancing Liverpool’s key player Virgil van Dijk slashed his odds to get the award from 4.50 (7/2) to 1.73 (8/11) according to William Hill.
The winner will be announced this December, but Messi still has a chance to take back the lead before summer ends. The Argentinian has a shot to prove himself to be the most valuable football player in the world once again by helping his national team win the Copa America tournament.
Despite Messi’s Copa America advantage, the club season starts in August leaving a room for title race swings.
