Have you ever guessed, where did the novelty bets come from? Well, maybe you heard something about who shot JR? If not, don’t worry, we’re about to take you back in time.
The year of 1980 was a special one for one of the
top online bookmakers William Hill. The bookie broke all the international headlines back then opening a market connected with a popular TV series, Dallas. To be more specific, the market was concerned about who shot the main character, JR Ewing.
William Hill listed such characters like Dusty Farlow, Vaughn Leland and Kristin Shepard among the front-runners, giving them the odds of
2.50 (6/4) &
5.00 (4/1), respectively. Surprisingly for all, the market went nuts and totalled for around £250,000 in bets (£1,000,000 in today’s money).
The series ended up with JR Ewing’s mistress, Shepard shooting a guy, which resulted in a quite a big of a loss for the bookie. William Hill also tried to use this stunt to sneak in the American market by also sponsoring a William Hill Trophy at Belmont Park.
