A 28-year-old Ben Stokes, who was a key figure in England's victory over
New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup final, just became a favourite to
win SPOTY award. The outstanding performance in Super Over win slashed
Unibet’s Stokes odds from 29.00 (28/1) to an undisputed favourite 2.50 (6/4), pulling him to the top of the market.
Bookmakers explain this due to a huge volume of bets placed by cricket fans where Stokes alone was responsible for 89% of those.
Thanks
to this enormous volume he was able to leap over Lewis Hamilton and
Raheem Sterling, who were favourites at the moment with 8.00 (7/1) and
12.00 (11/1) respectively.
Other interesting candidates are the
track start Dina Asher-Smith with 13.00 (12/1), who runs 4th followed by
Geraint Thomas - the last year’s winner. With 17.00 (16/1).
What is a real zero to hero moment for Stokes?
