Bookmakers offer bets on… Pokemon Go
People all over the world have gone crazy of Pokemonomania. The game brings its creators hundreds of millions of dollars income and now its popularity is used by bookmakers.
What is Pokemon Go?
Simply speaking, Pokemon Go is a mobile game that pushes you to go out and walk around the neighbourhood in search of hidden virtual creatures. Its creators claim, advertising the game, that it promotes physical activity, opening the world again and meeting new people. During the game its participants have to catch pokemon, then fight and trade the caught creatures in the real world. Due to modern technologies there are additional elements on smartphones’ screens. Thanks to such functions where “normal” people see just paths in parks, users of Pokemon Go will see for example a group of fighting creatures. Due to such technology the game comes to people and fighting before the screen of a computer/smartphone is taken to any place in the world. It can be a stadium, street, gas station or a bus stop.
Just several days after its release the application virtually equaled with the number of American users of Twitter, which has been active for … 10 years. Moreover, it increased the market value of the Japanese giant Nintendo by 9 billion dollars. Despite the application is totally free it brings daily income of 1,5 million dollars! All this is due to micro transactions which are realized for real money by players who want to increase their chances in the game.
Pokemon Go became a source of dangerous situations
The world has gone crazy of pokemon. This madness, however, has led to many dangerous and unusual events. Daily we can hear about accidents or misfortunes due to players who walk looking just into their smartphones. Unfortunately, the number of tragic situations grows. Often you can hear about burglars who lure their preys into deserted places, setting rare pokemon there. An attempt of capture of such creatures in the best case scenario ends in loss of a smartphone and other valuables. In its turn, one French gamer was almost shot, since in the race after the colorful creatures he intruded the territory of a military base.
So, users of the application more often face different obstacles. For example, in Iran the Supreme council of the country on virtual space introduced a categorical taboo of the game Pokemon Go on the territory of its country due to the danger of national security. In its turn, in Israel the commanders of the army announced about taboo of the application for soldiers, fearing that it can lead to leak of confidential information, including positions of military objects. The Chinese, however, claim that the game can be used in spying aims.
Will pokemon fan intrude the football pitch?
The game that has become so popular within days could not go unnoticed by bookmakers. Just several days after its release bets were available, for example will the number of Pokemon Go users overcome the number of Twitter users. The bet became outdated very soon. At the moment one of the bookmakers, acting in Eastern Europe has set a bet “Will Pokemon Go be downloaded more than 500 million times before October?”. The answer YES is estimated at 6/5(2,20) and NO – 3/5(1,60), but due to opening of new markets the situation with Pokemon Go is very dynamic.
Every of us was a witness of an intruder on a football pitch during a match. As a rule, such situation is totally harmless and even fun. It is normal for bookmakers to set odds for presence of intruders on the field. After the release of Pokemon Go one bookmaker went further and decided to offer its clients a bet “Will a fan catching pokemon appear on a field during a match of one of the leading European leagues?”. The leading leagues are the English Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, Champions League or League of Europe, and the odds make even 14/1 (15,00). Taking into account ingenuity, decisiveness and unpredictability of users of the application, it seems that such situation can be quite possible.
